I love Jamaican food. Nice big plate of curried chicken with sweet bread for dessert. Yum. But one of the more popular foods are patties. Probably because they are cheap. Last time I bought patties I remember an old Jamaican man asked his son if he wanted any patties. His son replied in a thick, almost exaggerated accent, "Pops, you know I don't eat that rubbish. I don't eat meat." That got me to thinking about veggie patties... So tonight I made some for dinner. I have to say they turned out just as delicious and with 100% less lard. So if beef patties give you heartburn you'll love these.
Ingredients
- 1 package Yves Meatless Ground
- 1 cup chopped onions
- ¼ cup taco seasoning (or salt, pepper, curry powder, thyme, chili powder)
- ¼ cup vegetable oil
- ½ cup goat cheese
- Four 6 inch circles of pastry dough (or 2 packages of seamless dough sheets cut in half)
- 1 egg
- tablespoon of milk
Directions
Preheat your oven to 375F.
Thaw the meatless grounds according to the instructions on the box. Pour oil into a skillet and bring it to medium heat. Fry the onions and meatless grounds in the oil until thoroughly cooked. Add seasoning to the skillet and mix it thoroughly. Do not add any water. Set the skillet aside to cool.
Seperate the egg white from the yolk and place the white into the mixing bowl and discard the yolk. Add milk to the bowl and stir until mixed. Don't stir too fast or you'll have meringue instead of an egg wash.
Roll out your dough on a (floured if necesary) cutting board. Brush the egg wash around the edge of the pastry dough. Divide your filling into four equal portions and place one portion in the center of each pastry. Crumble the goat cheese over top of the filling. Gently fold each pastry in half and pinch to seal the edges of the pastry. Trim the pastry if needed so it looks neat. Brush the remaining egg wash over the top of the pastries completely coating them.
Place the pastries on a foil lined cookie sheet and bake at 375F for about 15 minutes. They will be golden brown when finished cooking.
Serving Suggestion
Serve hot out of the oven with chili sauce or ketchup and pickled hot peppers.
