KG9AE QSL CardI have been an amateur radio operator since 1992. I have been an extra class operator since May, 1995. I am a member (and webmaster) of the Midwest Spectrum Management Alliance, Inc. I am not, nor have I ever been, a member of the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) for various reasons. They don't represent my view of reality most of the time. They seem to be off in some fantasy world where they make the rules. However, I am currently an accredited volunteer license examiner under the ARRL/VEC until 2002.

KG9AE on Packet Radio

I operate an Automatic Position Reporting System (APRS) Weather Reporting Station, KG9AE-1 on 144.39 MHz. I am a member (TAWG IN25) of the Tri-State APRS Working Group which coordinates APRS activity in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia. You can access APRS traffic via the Internet using one of the many APRS programs or browse through the Find U APRS database.

KG9AE on VHF/UHF

Alinco DR-605T On very high and ultra high frequency bands (VHF/UHF), I operate my station on 2 meters FM simplex (146.44 MHz) most of the time. My station consists of an Alinco DR-605T 2m/70cm twin-band transceiver connected to Cushcraft 2m 124WB wide-band 4 element Boomer Yagi and Cushcraft 70cm A449-11 wide-band 11 element Yagi antennas at 15.5m (50 ft) above ground elevation.

Azden PCS-7500H I operate a propagation beacon on 50.065 MHz CW. The transmitter is a, heavily modified for CW, Azden PCS-7500H operating at 10 Watts into a Cushcraft Ringo Ranger 1/2 wavelength 6 meters antenna vertically polarized at 16m AGL (~55 Ft). It is being keyed by a Communication Specialists ID-8 Morse Identifier.

Radio Shack HTX-100 My 10 meters station is a Radio Shack HTX-100 25 Watt SSB/CW (Single Side Band/Carrier Wave) transceiver connected to a Solarcon A-99 vertical at 2m (6 ft) above ground elevation.

I operate 30 - 80 meters on a Yaesu FT-101E SSB/CW Transceiver and Yaesu FR-101 SSB/RTTY/AM/FM/CW Digital Receiver connected to an inverted-V (broadside North-South) from the top of my tower. The combination is capable of transmitting on non-WARC Amateur frequencies from 10 - 160 meters and simultaneously receiving any two Amateur or Utility frequencies from 2 - 200 meter wavelengths. This is useful for accessing various Amateur and Utility satellite stations as well as long distance terrestrial stations.

Shortwave et al

Only remotely related to Amateur Radio is my small collection of old radio receivers. I own a Hallicrafters S-20R "Sky Champion" short-wave receiver (1939), Zenith 6D539 table-top short-wave receiver (1939), Knight R-100A short-wave receiver(1950s), and a Hallicrafters "Civic Patrol" VHF FM receiver (early 1960s). All are in working order and in excellent physical condition. The S-20R is the worst of the bunch with a patched up replacement transformer. I intend on replacing the transformer with an original or look-alike. Also, the original rivets (screws?) are missing from the aluminum side-panel decorations.

I enjoy listening to various Shortwave broadcast and utility stations. I frequently listen to Aircraft, Naval, Military, Marine, etc communications. I use a Sangean ATS-818 general coverage AM/W-AM/SSB/CW/W-FM communications receiver connected to the, above mentioned, inverted-V dipole. I also use a horizontally polarized 3 element Yagi at 14m (45 ft) elevation which is tuned to the 88 MHz - 108 MHz FM broadcast band. And, I have a Radio Shack PRO-2006 AM/FM/W-FM receiver for monitoring local communications. Between both receivers I have near full coverage from 150 KHz to 1.3 GHz (.15 MHz to 1300 MHz).
